DATAMARK - RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

For the last 25 years, Datamark’s principal activity has been the collection of data on packaging consumption for over 300 product categories from companies, which buy packaging. Each year forms are sent to principal packaging users in Brazil and the vast majority reply. In the few cases where we do not receive a response for some reason, the system automatically estimates the data based on previous years’ data. In addition we also research the packaging industry to cross check the data from the end users.

This information is used each year to estimate the total market for each product category and packaging type for each material.

In parallel with this we research all available sources of market data by telephone, fax or e-mail to evaluate the market trends for each product category. The objective is always to have at least two sources for comparison purposes. This information includes data from: IBGE (Brazilian Statistical Service), SIPAS (Brazilian Agricultural Inspection Service), Trade Associations, industry and other information sources both within Brazil and abroad.

After analysing the available data, and taking into consideration the degree of reliability of the data, a time series is selected, which approximates most closely to our vision of the market trend for the product category in question. Sources are always quoted when original data is used in the “Market Development” tables. The data from these other sources is also compared with the data resulting from the packaging research and adjusted where appropriate.

The objective is to provide reliable data on packaged products and the packaging used.

Our undertaking is never to divulge individual companies’ data to third parties.
