GENERAL INFORMATION

Brazil, with an area of 8.5 million km², is the fifth largest country in the world. The nation comprises of 26 states, and the Federal District. The country extends from latitude 5° in the north to latitude 33° in the south.

The most economically important region is the South-East where 42.6% of the total population live and most of the industry is concentrated.

In 2006 the population was estimated at 186.8 million. The total population is expected to grow by 6.7% in 2011.

The 2006 estimates showed that, of the economically active population of 97.5 million, 43.7 were women. 84.8% of residences are located in towns and cities.
