GENERAL INFORMATION
Brazil, with an area of 8.5 million km², is
the fifth largest country in the world. The nation comprises of 26 states, and
the Federal District. The country extends from latitude 5° in the north
to latitude 33° in the south.
The most economically important region is the South-East where 42.0% of the
total population live and most of the industry is concentrated.
In 2008 the population was estimated at 189.6 million. The total population
is expected to grow by 4.4% in 2013.
The 2008 estimates showed that, of the economically active population of
105.9 million, 44.9% were women. 85.0% of residences are located in towns
and cities.
