Import of ethanol by Brazil follows strong and must bend in April before 2017

SAO PAULO (Reuters)-Brazil must import in April more than 220 million liters of ethanol, double compared to the previous year, after record purchases in the first quarter, in a still favourable window to bring biofuel from abroad despite a rate applied to businesses that exceed 150 million litres per quarter. The import comes basically from the United States and is directed almost the entire Northeast, at a time of strong demand, home of the new crop of sugar cane in the country and, consequently, smaller stocks of biofuel, according to Datagro consulting and agency Williams maritime. "We have 224 million litres scheduled for April," said the President of Datagro, Plinio Nastari, noting that factors such as exchange rate and local and overseas prices are also favoring business. Such volume scheduled for April is pretty much in line with the established by Williams for this month of about 226 million litres. In April last year, the country imported about of 112 million liters, according to government data. "It shows that Brazil is included in the international ethanol market. Depending on prices and levels of ATR (Total Recoverable Sugar), Brazil has just exporting or importing, is a natural reflex that inserting "added Naeem. The strong imports now resembles the registered in the first half of 2017. At the time, external purchases pushed domestic prices, leading the industry to plead, by the Government, some mechanism to hold the flood of foreign product. At the end of August, the foreign trade Chamber (Camex) approved a 20% tariff on ethanol imports that exceed 600 million liters per year, or 150 million litres per quarter, valid from September. The measure has duration of 24 months. Importers, however, haven't intimidated on this tax thanks to a combination of market factors. "Is the price on the domestic market in Brazil, the price in the United States, the rate of Exchange, the shipping" listed Nastari, in reference to the factors behind the importation of ethanol. After 1.81 billion liters in 2017, the country imported 692.3 million liters of alcohol in the first quarter of 2018, up 11,3% compared to the same period last year, according to Datagro. The United States, ethanol suppliers to Brazil, recorded record sales in February. "The margin is smaller because of the rate (of 20%), but, on the average, there is a margin. And, if there is demand to be met, since the anhydro is mixed with gasoline, the importer acts to keep ' market share ', "said an ethanol market operator who asked not to be identified. VINTAGE ALCOHOL the tendency is that the current window to import ethanol start close from now on, given the start of the harvest of sugar cane 2018/19 in the Center-South of Brazil, the largest producing region in the world. It is expected that the plants of the region will focus on the production of ethanol, to meet the growing demand in the country. The manufacture of alcohol is to increase 10% in South Central this season, according to research from Reuters. "From this month will depend on price behavior," said the operator and analyst Eduardo Sia, Sucden, designing a natural price drop of alcohol in the Brazilian market. For him, another factor of attention is the escalation of tensions between China and United States, which has involved various commodities, including ethanol. Any reduction in u.s. ethanol purchases by China would make the offer in the United States increased, decreasing the prices there and, consequently, improving the competitiveness of the product, he explained. Sought, the sugar cane industry Union (Unica), an organization which supported the taxation of ethanol last year, declined to comment.
